We know that careers need to be developed, they don’t just happen!
In fact, Julian Rotter (an American psychologist known for developing influential theories) once said: The difference between those that are successful and those that are not, has to do with the degree to which we take responsibility for the things that happen to us. He defined this as the Locus of control.
Have you had total control of your career journey? If not, you need to be active in the process and align a number of areas, including setting goals and working on attributes that will influence others.
Career success is actually a personal definition and therefore only you can define success. It could be the next promotion, the next salary increase, the next exciting attention seeking title you earn. It could also be shifting the goal posts, rather than what you post on social media to depict your “success”.
Have you thought of changing your own measure of career success and thereby accepting and promoting what makes you unique and amazing? If you can choose your career path and build a career that gives you satisfaction that you want and this is aligned with your aspirations as a human being, isn’t that success?
